Salty Chocolate Triple Berry Ice Cream Sundae: Under 200 Calories
I have excluded sugar from my diet for close to a decade now, and I'll tell you why. First of all, eating sugar makes you crave sweets. Just as gluten makes you crave breads and pasta, sugar is quite literally an addictive edible. It is now possible to replace sugar with many delicious alternatives that taste just as good and feel better too, so that's a great plus! There are certain substitutes and replacements that aren't as healthy like artificial sweeteners and "diet" options, but the best options come naturally. So, the more natural you eat, the better off you are.
Of course we all know that sugar gives you a temporary "buzz" of excitement and energy, but that leads to a crash and decrease of energy as well. Weight gain, exhaustion and irregularity are all common with sugar consumption as well as out of control behavior in children and fatigue following. I haven't served my kids ice cream with sugar for I don't know how long, and you know what? It has saved me many dreaded "bouncing off the wall" episodes. Recipes without sugar don't have to be tasteless and boring; add a splash of honey, agave nectar, maple syrup or even fresh fruit. These are all sources of natural sugar, even apple sauce and real juice. Think about this as you are preparing your next personal desert or snack for your kids.
